One of France’s oldest breeds of canine, the breed is the center of attention wherever it goes, likely due to the distinctive nature of Dogue de Bordeaux characteristics. Whether it is their unrivalled charm or their mischievous antics, the breed is a favourite amongst even the fussiest of pet owners. But what exactly is it that makes the Dogue de Bordeaux so popular around the world?
The Popular Characteristics of the Dogue de Bordeaux
To begin, the Dogue de Bordeaux is renowned for its very protective conduct which is especially clear in the presence of external threats or suspected threats. Many believe this is a result of their hefty build and previous experiences as guard and hunting dogs, with both roles requiring the breed to act courageously and exhibit vigilance. This, accompanied by their strong devotion to their family makes the Dogue de Bordeaux an ideal addition to a home seeking a dependable pet.
Other commonly cited characteristics of the Dogue de Bordeaux include that they are affectionate and charismatic towards their owners. Whilst they might first appear intimidating, many will be surprised to know that the breed is actually especially gentle and kind - something which they convey by lavishing their family with their affections. This makes them the perfect family pet, particularly for families with children too.
Unfortunately it is common to find that the Dogue de Bordeaux tends to approach other dogs in a more territorial, stubborn and offensive manner. In fact, in the presence of other canines, the breed can become fairly hostile and even provoke small fights. Whilst this is a problem, it can be resolved by introducing the breed to different animals when they are young so they can begin to socialise earlier.
Yet another Dogue de Bordeaux trait is that they are considerably more relaxed and sluggish than other popular breeds. Due to this, the Dogue de Bordeaux is far better suited to short daily walks, averaging about half an hour each time before they require a rest, whilst other breeds may require and endure longer and more intense exercise. Although, you should not assume this makes them an easy breed to possess, since Dogues can be particularly challenging to manage and train in their youth.
However, possibly the biggest attraction towards the Dogue de Bordeaux is their gorgeous appearance and overall aesthetic. Not only do Dogues have a remarkably broad build, with their shoulders reaching a maximum width of 27 inches, but they also sport a stocky build, with thick legs and an average weight of around 100 pounds - something which sets them aside from many breeds. Although, it is fair to say the most stunning and distinct feature of the Dogue is their luxurious short hair fawn and mahogany coat.
